Don was born in 1989 in the Eastern peninsula of China, a mountain city called Tsingdao. He never liked school, quoting his own word ”I did little homework after 15”. Naturally, he dropped out of high school and worked independently as a graphic designer and performance artist, during this period he created many influential street art such as “beggar in a suit”, “street police helping small merchants” etc., which attracted massive media reports.
AnotherLand project was initiated by Mr. Don and his friends. As young men they used to hangout together in a seaside house, making music, poetry, art and films, before they get to know the concept of “eco-community”. But gradually, due to financial and family reason, this group of friends fell apart. Therefore he always wanted to build a place where people can freely concentrate and develop their spiritual interest without worrying about material pressure. This is the original motivation of AnotherLand project.
In year 2011, Don and his wife moved away from Tsingdao city into the Laoshan mountain village, which is not only beautiful but also famous for its Daoism history. They started a life independent from modern society by building everything with hands: house, furniture, food garden, toilet, energy, washing machine, clothes, paper, cooking ingredients etc. They do this in a way of art project: they documented the process of experience and solutions, built an “AnotherLand – self-sustaining life database” in hope of helping the future youth who want to leave the city and live a life on their own. Therefore they establish an NGO “Anotherland”, the first and only NGO in China focusing on eco-community development.
In time they got to know about eco-communities in other parts of the world, inspired by these concepts and practice, he organized twice in China “Eco-village Summit” which is the first platform of Chinese eco-village practioners and attracted interested parties. To help Chinese better understanding the concept of Eco-village, and build efficient communication, he re-coined the concept of “eco-community, eco-village, shared community, co-housing etc.” into a new concept “another land”, thus he is named “the founder of China’s eco-village project AnotherLand” by mass media in China.
